Freeform treeless saddle is a one piece foam mould covered by the best Italian full grain calfskin.
The modern process of Freeform saddle’s foam injection molding to produce a complete saddle (not only some parts) is a great revolution in the saddle making world, molding process ensures total symmetry at the core of the Freeform saddle.
The soft structure and flexibility of the saddle allow the horse total unrestricted freedom of movement, horse can move without losing its natural grace. The horse back can arch and thus enhances vertical and lateral movement of the thoracic vertebral column.
Rider is placed right behind the wither therefore avoiding pressure beyond the 14th thoracic vertebrae and allowing full range of movement of the shoulder blade. This way the rider weight is carried without causing pain, discomfort and damage to the horse’s body.
The area on the horse’s back equipped to carry the rider comfortably is between the 9th and the 13th thoracic vertebrae, Freeform saddle wrap the rider weight around the horses center of gravity.
Although fully flexible pressure testing through PLIP (Port Lewis Impression Pad) has shown the Freeform saddles to have some of the best weight/pressure distributing results among treeless saddles. The Impression Pad when placed under a saddle will give you a visual record of how the weight is distributed being made with a clear flexible vinyl and containing a moldable putty.

Whilst Freeform saddle is not a “one size fits all” solution, its overall flexibility potentially allows the rider to use one saddle on more than one horse (when used in conjunction with a properly designed treeless saddle pad) plus, as your horse’s back changes with age and conditioning, the saddle consistently maintains a good fit.
Freeform saddle feels more like a conventional saddle for the rider but it provides a better contact! Freeform has a twist like any other conventional English saddle and therefore the adjustment for the rider is minimal.
In Freeform you will not seat as wide which makes it also suitable for riders with impaired hip joints. Freeform saddle is made from a base (available in standard, short back or extra short back length) and a detachable seat. The standard base total length is 22″, the short back is 20″ for shorter gaited horses and the extra short back is 18″ 1/2, total weight of base+seat is about 3,5 kg; seats are completely removable and are attached to the base through a strong large piece of high performance Velcro. Seats are available in different size, from 15″ till 20″. Different seats are available to offer each rider the best support for every individual performance need.
A flexible aluminum arch in the pommel section of the detachable seat give a self adjusting fit to suit several horses shape, it aids wither clearance and adjusts automatically with both the movement and shape of the horse.
Freeform acts as a totally tree-free saddle with flexibility throughout its entirely, but without collapsing in the pommel arch over time and use.
When transferring your saddle from a very wide bodied horse to a narrow horse, just remove the detachable seat, gently squeeze the pommel arch together, and then re-fix the seat to your saddle base. The pommel will automatically adjust to the shape of the horse.
A fully adjustable stirrup position allows the rider to place their stirrups so the ideal shoulder-hip-heel alignment can be easily attained. This adjustable stirrup attachment is designed to allow different stirrup positions, from jumping position to classical dressage. An adjustable stirrup attachment allows each rider to adjust his own stirrup placement in the easiest way.
All D rings/buckles used are stainless steele. Velcro parts are made of the best high performance Velcro.
The self adjusting girthing system is a self-swinging arrangement and fit most horses conformations, this positions the girth automatically in the girth groove irrespective of where the saddle is placed on the horse.
The internal section of the girthing is set on a “Y” system to help distribute the pressure over the bearing area of the saddle and assist in saddle stability.
This design also ensure that the stirrup and girthing arrangement do not attach at the same point, thereby preventing pressure from radiating at one point on the horse back.
The girth straps are made from leather-faced coated Biothane and are English style billets that accept an English dressage girth with 2 buckles.
Designed by Paulita Neff and Amy Sumrall this girthing has been created to have options to fit many different horses. The 3 D rings and the removable girth straps allow the maximum freedom in positioning the saddle on the horse back.
3 different materials can be used to line the underneath part of the saddle: calfskin (black, brown …) suede (black, brown…) or simpanova (just black).

Another useful Freeform option are the different rolls dimensions and positioning.
Choose between different knee rolls measures options (standard, plus ….) or add also thigh rolls (to add security) or no rolls at all.
The cut back wither called “nose job” available regular (9 cm) or large (13 cm) for high and withered horses.
All Freeform models can have the option of the velcro on saddle base to attach panels.
Panels system was developed for many different reasons. Fitting (shoulder and wither issues), weight distribution, long distance riding.
The panels have a Velcro opening along the top, like a pocket. This allows an easy access to fill them with different foam if necessary (panels are provided of a double layer antishock foam as standard) . Then they are fixed under the saddle at the best position required by the horse’s back and spine.
You will need a tight 3 fingers in between your 2 panels in the gullet area. Adjustment to the panels from the stirrup area to the pommel of the saddle can vary for your horse’s needs. In other words most horses have two very different shoulders so with the panels you may place them where they are needed.
Panels provide a very good wither and spinal clearance and have shown excellent pressure scans on a large variety of horses and riders.
An high performance Velcro attaches the panels safely to the saddle, with suede leather around the front part of the panels for good optical appearance and longevity.
The sympanova material that cover the panels provides a nice additional cushioning effect. Because there is no tree to impede the horse’s shoulder movement it does not matter if the saddle panels touch or lay over the horse’s shoulder.
Routine cleaning is recommended to aid in the longevity of your Freeform saddle. A complete cleaning twice a year, followed by a conditioner and protectant, will maintain the finish and increase durability.
We recommend the use of a good water based leather cleaner and Leather Restorer.
With wet leather please take action before the wet leather completely dries. Remove any dirt or mud from the wet leather with a damp rag. While the leather is still damp and its pores are still open, apply a coat of Leather Restorer.
As the water evaporates, capillary action will pull the conditioner down between the fibers to take its place. The wet leather needs to absorb conditioner deep within its fibers to replace oils flushed out by the water.

I’ve been using Freeform treeless saddles for well over a decade, they have given me proven results in training and in competition, including 50 and 100 mile endurance rides like the Quilty and the Tevis Cup.
I’m a fan of treeless saddles generally – they suit the way I ride and they accommodate the motion of my horses’ backs. I ride a lot and most of that is on trail. So I need my horses to be confident they won’t be punished by rigid tack as they travel over uneven ground or pass up and down hills. Freeform saddles provide the right balance of structure and flexibility to keep my horses safe.
Structure and flexibility – that’s important. Not enough structure and the rider’s weight is concentrated over too small an area. Not enough flexibility and the saddle acts as a rod against the horse’s back – it may appear to fit fine on the flat, but bores into the horses shoulders going downhill or loins when going up.
Each Freeform saddle is made to order. There are different types of base, different styles of seat, different girthing options – each component can be individually customised to suit riders and horses.
The price is excellent. While Freeform saddles are more expensive than most other treeless saddles, consider they are made to order in Italy from quality leather and materials. Brand treed saddles at the same price point give you a synthetic saddle mass produced in China… In the end, it’s about feel. Endurance riders need to feel every part of every step their horses take. There is nothing like the close contact feel you get from your horse when riding in a Freeform saddle.
